Q. How tall is a miniature horse?

A. Miniatures are split into two sizes - "A" category miniatures are 34" and under, "B" category miniatures are over 34" to 38". It is not unusual to find miniatures as small as 26", though 32"-36" are most common.

Q. How do you measure a miniature horse?

A. Miniatures are not measured like ponies and large horses ie. at the withers. Instead they are measured at the last hairs of the mane.

Q. What are the heights for showing AMHR Miniatures?

A. Division A: Division B:
2 year olds 33" and under Over 33" to 37"
Yearlings 32" and under Over 32" to 36"
Foal of Current Year 30" and under Over 30" to 32"

Q. Can miniature horses be ridden?

A. General Rule of Thumb from most literature is no more than 20-25% of body weight and no riding until age three.

Q. How big (height/weight) of a mini should one have to pull how much weight (driver and cart included)? Are there any standard guidelines to go by?

A. Truthfully, it will depend on your set up, and what type of ground you are driving on. With a breast collar harness, light weight metal pipe cart and a paved road a mini can easily pull up to 3 times their weight. Out on the trail, over uneven ground, or slight hills I would use a full collar, balanced draft and try to stay around twice the horse's weight.
Remember, it isn't always how much weight a mini can pull but how much weight they can stop with the breeching going down hill. If you have never driven before please find a mentor who will show you what to do. Driving is a lot more complicated than riding. Linda in Ohio

There is general rule for carting as for weight 3 to 5 times their own weight for pulling and 1/3 of a horses weight for riding. Bambi Roylance
